I would love to try it, but what freaks me out is to think I'll be stepping on nasty stuff. Also, from wearing shoes my whole life I'm a big 'tenderfoot'. I guess it would have to be a little at a time.

Did you try it? What did you think?

I used to hate running until I started running barefoot at the beach. I was convinced that I could start running regularly until I strapped on some shoes and hated almost every minute of it. But I tirelessly kept at it. Then a friend told me about barefoot running, so last night was my first attempt running barefoot at the track.

They say take it easy - but I find barefoot so much easier than shoes! I read somewhere that it should be no more than 1/4 mi at a time when first converting, but I finally stopped myself at 1.5 miles. I had runners high almost the whole length of the run. I think I'm a convert.

I haven't been to the Snail's Pace shop in a while. Do they carry Vibram FiveFingers, Feelmax or any other minimalist/barefoot-type shoe?

Hello Snug,

yes, I tried it but I only ran a mile and in the soccer field. It felt good, I think next time I will try the track.

You should come over to the Track on Tuesdays.

I might try out the Thursday run, although I'm still a pretty novice runner and I'm not confident enough to run barefoot in a group setting...

But Tuesdays sound great. I could use the practice/help (in shoes).

I'm going to keep this barefoot experience private for now. The stigma against bare feet is overwhelming.

Your club president has been known to wear the Vibram Five's to the Thursday club run on occasion, so its nothing out of the ordinary.  I just wouldn't recommend it this Thursday: wet + barefoot = softened skin = blisters.    Ive gotten terrible blisters running in the VFF's in wet grass.  Im sure the same would happen running with bare feet on wet pavement.

You're right - definitely not trying it on wet pavement this Thursday.

I don't have VFFs, which seem to make it more socially acceptable. I'm talking about foot-commando.

I dont know if thats entirely true.  I think I get more funny looks from the VFF's than if I were just barefoot.

Injinji makes amazing wool socks (their "outdoor" line) that fit in five fingers, keep your feet warm and mostly dry (it takes a LOT to soak them through), and prevent blisters.  My five fingers have gone through rivers, rain, ice, snow, up and down mountains...no blisters as long as I wear injinji socks too.

Josh somehow wears them through all kinds of terrain/weather without socks and doesn't get blisters...I'm jealous...
